Library Media Specialist

FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Reports To: Building Principal

 

Supervises: Paraprofessionals, adult volunteers, student aides, and substitutes, if required

 

Employment Terms: 11 (220 Contracted Days)  

 

Grade: Teacher Scale



Position Summary

Position is responsible for cataloging and processing library materials, assisting patrons and school staff, checking books in and out of the library, maintaining audio/visual equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned

Essential Functions

  1. Manage the library/media center program consistent with established guidelines, policies and procedures.
  2. Maintain budget and accurate records and produce/submit reports in a timely manner.
  3. Collaborate with teachers to provide integrated SOL-based instruction that actively involves the students.
  4. Assist teachers and students in research and technology.
  5. Teach information literacy and research skills.
  6. Collaborate with teachers for curriculum planning.
  7. Select, acquire, catalog, and process age-appropriate books, electronic, and audiovisual resources that support the curriculum goals and the Virginia Standards of Learning.
  8. Promote lifelong learning and general literacy through reading and literature appreciation.
  9. Maintain accurate up-to-date inventory of equipment and materials.
  10. Participate in professional development and provide professional leadership to colleagues.
  11. Coordinate library/media center events (book fairs, etc.).
  12. Train co-workers in proper use of equipment circulated by the library media center.
  13. Follow recommended cataloging and processing procedures.
  14. Maintain an attractive, inviting media center where information is organized and accessible and the climate is conducive to learning.
  15. Communicate with parents.
  16. Promote the ethical and legal use of resources.
  17. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Extensive knowledge of children/young adult literature and materials, and current trends in school library media services.
  2. Knowledge of computer applications and technology for schools and school library media centers.
  3. Ability to work with children.
  4. Strong teaching, research, organizational, communication, and program management skills.
  5. Ability to multitask and work to a deadline.
  6. Ability to maintain standards of behavior.
  7. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents.

 

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  1. A valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching License.
  2. Endorsement in School Library Media PreK-12 from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in written form.
  2. Regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions.
  3. Requires the ability to bend and lift up to 50 pounds.
  4. Frequently requires walking and occasionally requires standing, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling and lifting.
  5. Work has standard vision requirements; visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts.
  6. Must possess good eye-hand coordination for minor repair of equipment and books.
  7. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  8. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  9. Occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

Special Requirements

  1. Position may require the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles. Candidate’s driving record may be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual. 
  2. All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:
    1. Tuberculosis Screening
    2. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
    3. State Police Criminal History Investigation
    4. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

 

Evaluation Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County 

School Board’s policy manual.
