Reports To: Director of Student Activities, who provides overall program objectives and evaluations in conjunction with the Building Principal.

 

Supervises: High School Assistants and Middle School Coaches

Job Summary

 

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.  At the same time, the student-athlete shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self discipline and self confidence.

Coaching Responsibilities

  1. Yearlong supervision and implementation of weight and conditioning sessions, Boys Tennis specific workouts, pre game, in game and post game strategies as well as non sport specific functions.
  2. Should be present at all in and out of season functions involving Boys Tennis or as required by the Director of Student Activities.

 

General

  1. Will be, in coordination with the Director of Student Activities, the face of Dinwiddie Boys Tennis in dealings with Dinwiddie County Public Schools, Dinwiddie High/Middle School, Dinwiddie Athletics and the Dinwiddie Community.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist the Director of Student Activities in selecting qualified candidates to be recommended for hiring to the building Principal and the School Board.  These coaching recommendations shall include recommendations within the athletic department in general and Boys Tennis specifically.
  2. Assist the Director of Student Activities in ensuring that all assistant coaches within their sport are operating within the guidelines set forth within the Dinwiddie County Public Schools, Dinwiddie High School Athletic Department and Virginia High School League policies.
  3. Send team pertinent information to student-athletes and parents.
  4. Ensure that student-athletes and parents are fully informed with regards to Dinwiddie Athletic Department and team rules and policies as well as practice and game schedules.
  5. Monitor athlete behavior, attendance and academic status.  (This includes providing corrective assistance to administrators and teachers as requested and necessary).
  6. Development of a team club account budget and overseeing all team specific fundraisers.
  7. Prepare athletic venues for games and practices (team area and scoring table set up).
  8. Represent the Dinwiddie High School Athletic Department at Region and State selection meetings as necessary.
  9. Assume other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Student Activities.

Physical Requirements

  1. This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
  2. Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and frequently requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms and lifting.
  3. Work has standard vision requirements.
  4. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  5. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.
  6. Work requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  7. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. gym, field events) and requires occasional visits to off-site locations.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  2. Demonstrates professionalism and fosters a positive environment.
  3. Knowledge of athletic program regulations.

 

Qualifications, Education, Experience and Special Requirements

  1. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  2. Position may require the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles; therefore, the incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual. 
  3. All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:
    1. Tuberculosis Screening
    2. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
    3. State Police Criminal History Investigation
    4. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

Evaluation Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie

County School Board’s policy manual.
