Employment Terms: 12-Month Full-time Position (260 Contracted Days)

 

 

Position Summary

Performs difficult professional and administrative work assisting the principal in the coordination, supervision and management of the school educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the school board. Ensures student safety. Work is performed as apparent or assigned, under the limited supervision of the principal. Organizational supervision is exercised over all school personnel in the absence of the principal.

Essential Functions

  1. Assists the principal in developing, monitoring, evaluating and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the School Board.
  2. Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school; participates in the evaluation of teachers and other employees; interprets and enforces school and school system policies and regulations.
  3. Enforces standards of discipline, health, safety and general welfare for students; assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body; deals with special cases as necessary.
  4. Proposes schedules of classes and extracurricular activities; helps schedule courses, students and teachers; supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
  5. Supervises teachers and departments as assigned by the principal; serves as primary contact for substitute teachers; monitors and assists in the supervision of extracurricular activities.
  6. Assists in the planning and implementation of a systematic method of supervising the instructional program through the use of observations, documentations and follow-up conferences; assists in protecting the instructional time from interruptions and intrusions.
  7. Explains and interprets system-wide curriculum/instructional goals and objectives to teachers, parents, pupils and the community.
  8. Serves with parents, faculty and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives; conducts meetings with parents, students and teachers.
  9. Assists in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other school support services; helps conduct safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  10. Maintains facilities in a safe, orderly and attractive manner; oversees custodial and building maintenance services.
  11. Requisitions supplies, textbooks and equipment; assists in the maintenance of inventories and the distribution of materials, books and equipment; maintains records and receipts for materials received.
  12. Maintains a variety of files; prepares periodic and special reports as required.
  13. Serves as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  14. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school.
  2. Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
  3. Knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development.
  4. Ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of an elementary or secondary school and establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  5. Must possess the ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  6. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.
  7. Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.
  8. Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, community agencies, parents, students and the general public.

 

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  1. Master's Degree and/or provide documentation of eligibility for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in administration and supervision.
  2. At least three years of successful experience as a teacher with considerable administrative and supervisory experience at the elementary or secondary level, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in written form.
  2. Regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions.
  3. Requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
  4. Frequently requires walking and occasionally requires standing, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  5. Work has standard vision requirements; visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts.
  6. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  7. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  8. Requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
  9. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle or equipment and be mobile enough to travel and monitor all aspects of the school program in the settings within area of assignment.
  10. Occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements

  1. Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate (s) and/or endorsement (s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
  2. Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles may be required. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual. 
  3. All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:
    1. Tuberculosis Screening
    2. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
    3. State Police Criminal History Investigation
    4. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
