Employment Terms: 10-Month Full-time Position (200 Contacted Days)

 

Grade: Teacher Scale



Position Summary

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Exceptional Education, the Licensed Autism Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives. Follows State mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community.

Essential Functions

  1. Plan and develop lesson plans and IEPs to meet the individual needs of students.
  2. Instructs students in a program of study which meets stated objectives and provides transfer of knowledge.
  3. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  4. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  5. Guides the learning process toward achievement of all IEP's and in harmony with the goals; establish clear objectives for the students.
  6. Evaluate student's academic and social growth, keep appropriate records and data, prepare report cards and progress reports, behavioral assessments, and IEPs.
  7. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central office support as required to provide accurate and objective statements relevant to student progress in a timely manner.
  8. Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences, IEP meetings, and other means to discuss student progress.
  9. Serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
  10. Administers standardized testing in accordance with division testing practices.
  11. Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
  12. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of special education and specialty areas.
  2. Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities.
  3. Thorough knowledge of school rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  4. Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
  5. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.
  6. Must report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  7. Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.
  8. Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports.
  9. Ability to demonstrate understanding of the core curriculum and Virginia SOL's.
  10. Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential; create a positive atmosphere for learning.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  1. Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher's license or certification with appropriate endorsement in subject area for which employed; or
  2. Has completed the requirements for a Virginia certificate or license and has filed an application for same; or
  3. Will qualify for a Virginia certificate or license prior to the effective date of employment.
  4. Prior teaching experience and/or student teaching is strongly preferred.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements

  1. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
  2. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires pushing or pulling.
  3. Work has standard vision requirements.
  4. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  5. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  6. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
  7. Must be mobile enough to monitor students in all instructional settings (in school and on school grounds).
  8. Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  9. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

  1. Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board.
  2. A valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles may be required. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual. 
  3. All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:
    1. Tuberculosis Screening
    2. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
    3. State Police Criminal History Investigation
    4. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

 

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
