Bus Aide (2024-2025)

Employment Terms: 10-Month Full-time Position (182 Contracted Days)

Position Summary
Performs human support work assisting with the transportation of pupils with special transportation needs to and from school, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the bus driver.

Essential Functions
- Assists students on and off buses.
- Ensures that all student passengers, including those in wheelchairs and braces, are properly secured in their assigned seats or wheelchair slot.
- Assists in controlling student behavior.
- Tends to the special needs and conditions of each student.
- Learns bus routes, schedules, and pick up points.
- Assists substitute drivers with directions.
- Keeps abreast of route and bus stop changes and student day care arrangements.
- Assists drivers in conducting bus evacuation drills.
- Assists drivers in maintaining a clean bus interior.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Bus Driver and/or appropriate administrator.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of the transportation of students.
- Some knowledge of transporting handicapped students.
- Ability to assist students with patience and understanding.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates and students.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration.
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
- A valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia may be required to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. Driving record may be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
- All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:

- Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
- State Police Criminal History Investigation
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search
Evaluation
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
