Employment Terms: 10-Month Full-Time Position (190 Contacted Days)

 

Grade: D/G4

 

Position Summary

Performs human support work assisting the classroom teacher with instructional activities by working with individual students or small groups, assisting students to reinforce presented material through special efforts and repetitions, preparing and maintaining files and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the assigned Teacher and School Principal.

Essential Functions

  1. Assists classroom teachers in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks; copies, collates and distributes materials; assists with large group activities. 
  2. Maintains various records and files; grades student work. 
  3. Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce material already introduced by teacher. 
  4. Assists with a variety of assignments and tasks associated with the needs of students. 
  5. May be assigned to assist in special areas such as reading, mathematics, computer lab, library, in-school suspension, etc. 
  6. Ensures work assigned to students is completed and returned; enforces discipline and safety rules. 
  7. Performs a variety of office and clerical assistance tasks for classroom teacher and school office staff; makes copies of various materials; sorts and distributes mail; maintains filing system; greets visitors; answers telephone; provides information. 
  8. Enters a variety of data into computer; assists with student registration; checks items for clerical accuracy and completeness. 
  9. Guides independent study and other work assigned by the teacher. 
  10. Reports student problems to teacher and assists with student problems. 
  11. Performs cafeteria, hall and/or bus duties; helps supervise playground and physical education activities. 
  12. Assists with lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing and wash-up routines and arrival and departure of students; escorts students to classes; assists students during meals. 
  13. Prepares work orders for building and equipment maintenance and repair. 
  14. May serve as temporary substitute teacher in the event of teacher illness/emergency. 
  15. Participates in in-service training programs as assigned. 
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching.
  2. General knowledge of school programs and policies.
  3. Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment.
  4. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripherals.
  5. Ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports.
  6. Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  7. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  8. Ability to type and perform data entry work accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed.
  9. Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.

 

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  1. A passing score on the ParaPro Assessment is required or;
  2. Completion of forty eight (48) semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education or;
  3. Obtained an associate degree at a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  4. Experience in providing clerical support and working with children is preferred.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. 

 

Physical Requirements

  1. This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
  2. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, using hands and fingers, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, reaching with hands and arms and lifting.
  3. Work requires close vision, distance vision, color perception and peripheral vision.
  4. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  5. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  6. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities. 
  7. Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  8. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

  1. Ability to acquire valid driver's license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles; therefore, the incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
  2. All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:

            a. Tuberculosis Screening
            b. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
            c. State Police Criminal History Investigation
            d. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

 

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School

Board’s policy manual.
