Description

We are seeking LPN/RN applicants who would like to substitute on an as-needed basis when we have school nurses away from work. You must have a nurse's license to fill this position.

 

Position Summary
Performs intermediate to advanced human support work providing nursing care and physical screening to students, dispensing medication, preparing and maintaining student and clinic records and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the School Principal and the Director of Assessment and Student Services.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides nursing care and physical screening to students; maintains and operates a school clinic; prepares and maintains student and clinic records and reports.
  2. Performs health care services for students and staff in the school system.
  3. Performs nursing assessment of each student sent to school health clinic; maintains records of treatment and performs follow-up tasks.
  4. Makes observations and assesses condition; implements health care plan for each student examined; assesses staff for workers compensation injuries.
  5. Counsels students, parents, guardians and/or school personnel about problems observed or immediate health concerns; notifies appropriate authorities and documents suspected child abuse; notifies staff of food allergies.
  6. Administers daily, emergency and as needed medications and first aid; requests and maintains medication authorization forms.
  7. Screens and tests students for hearing and vision problems, height, weight, blood pressure and scoliosis according to state mandates; enters immunizations and health screenings into SIF computer program.
  8. Refers students for medical care as needed; contacts physicians in regard to student health issues.
  9. Observes and screens students for communicable diseases; notifies School Board and Health Department as needed.
  10. Performs specialized procedures such as catheterization, physical therapy, and diabetic monitoring; performs Medicaid time studies.
  11. Provides instruction to staff on OSHA, Epi-pen, CPR, medication, etc.; instructs students and staff on nutrition, dental health, first aid, disease prevention, substance abuse and related health concerns; coordinates and teaches Family Life classes; provides health education materials and information.
  12. Attends IEP and child study meetings as needed.
  13. Assists physician with sports physicals for students.
  14. Ensures compliance with required immunizations and school physicals; reviews health history and vaccine records.
  15. Coordinates special health care events.
  16. Maintains clinic cleanliness; ensures that adequate and proper supplies are available; maintains inventory of supplies.
  17. Serves on the School Health Advisory Board and as a member of the Schools Disaster/Crisis Management Team.
  18. Assume other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services and Assessments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Thorough knowledge of common medical practices, procedures and techniques associated with a standard physical examination.
  2. Thorough knowledge of the preliminary diagnosis of medical problems and the administration of medications related to treatment and first aid.
  3. Thorough knowledge of health education principles, practices and procedures.
  4. Ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatments as required.
  5. Ability to follow technical oral and written instructions.
  6. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.
  7. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, parents and the general public.
  9. Qualifications, Education and Experience
  10. Associates/Technical degree with coursework in health sciences, or a related field.
  11. Moderate experience in community health, emergency or pediatric nursing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements

  1. This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
  2. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  3. Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision.
  4. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  5. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  6. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.
  7. Work regularly requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  8. Work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus.
  9. Work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).


Special Requirements

  1. Possession of a valid appropriate license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia upon hire.
  2. Possession of CPR/AED and children's vision screener certifications upon hire.
  3. Position may require the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles; the incumbents driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Boards policy manual.

 

All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:

  1. Tuberculosis Screening
  2. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
  3. State Police Criminal History Investigation
  4. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

 

Evaluation
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Boards policy manual.
